Today I decided to make challah bread, pronounced ha-la, not cha-las. I used the recipe from I am a food blog.
First start by whisking together 1 cup of warm water with 2 teaspoons of sugar. Then add 2 tablespoons of rapid dry yeast and let sit for 5 minutes.
Then in the bowl of a stand mixer mix together 6 cups AP flour, 1/4 cup sugar, and 2 teaspoons of salt.
Then in a small bowl whisk together 4 eggs, 2/3 cup of flavorless veggie or canola oil, 1/2 cup water, and 1/4 cup mild honey.
Then pour the yeast mix into the flour mix, immediately followed by the egg mix, knead with the dough hook for 5-7 minutes. Divide the dough into 2 equal-ish pieces and set into a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let proof for 2 – 2 /12 hours.
Roll into logs…
… and (try) to braid.
Coat with egg wash, cover with plastic wrap and let it sit for another 30 minutes.
Bake at 375 for 20-25 minutes.
